I think Minecraft has had plenty of different and distinct moods throughout its whole history. Minecraft Classic doesn't feel like Minecraft Alpha 1.1. Minecraft Survival Test doesn't feel like Minecraft Infdev. Minecraft 1.2 doesn't feel like Minecraft 1.7 (both being Release versions).

What is the best YIf you wanna have the classic simple charm of Beta you should play 1.7.3 as it polished many annoying elements of early Minecraft, while keeping what it made it great. Beta 1.8 is the version where the game started to look like what we know it as now. I got an illegal copy of Beta 1.8.1 from my friend towards the end of high school. Played that for months. Then one day I wondered why I couldn't find snow, went to the wiki, found out no snow biomes generated in Beta 1.8. But then I found out that there was potions, enchantments and a dragon added to the game, so I bought the game officially.
